Wanders on the Great Allegheny Passage | Vernal Equinox

Moon Day 21

Starts Mar 20, 2025 01:04 AM

Ends Mar 21, 2025 02:05 AM

Great day for New Beginnings

The Vernal Equinox occurred this morning at 5:01 a.m. It was a balmy 52ยบ F in the Cool City. Robins rang in the Spring with their chirping at about 4:05 a.m. and song sparrows chimed in shortly thereafter. By 6:30 a.m. hermit thrushes, northern mockingbirds, and crested nuthatches added to the cacophony

Am heading down the GAP as soon as the sun comes up.

Some flora has already made an appearance. Coltsfoot is really putting on a show.

Witches broom (mullein) has also made a appearance.

Witches broom. Not quite sure is if is first or second year growth (witches broom is a biannual) Maybe someone in the Witches Broom Community could enlighten me on this?

Rosette of witches broom

Also some dandelion, but most rosettes are as yet tiny and not worth picking.

Most advanced dandelion I have seen, probably due to heat radiated from the rock.

Also this is probably cut-leaved dandelion (Taraxacum dissectum) and not common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), although it is hard to be sure at this stage.
