Wanders on the Great Allegheny Passage | Flora #4

Moon Day 25

Starts Feb 22, 2025 03:17 AM

Ends Feb 23, 2025 04:14 AM

Day is best spent in solitude, contemplation and prayer.

Goldenrod (10.03.2024)
A native of North American, goldenrod grows profusion along the GAP, often covering tennis-court-sized areas or larger. Although viewed as a weed by some it does have its fans, some of them almost rabid in their devotion: See Goldenrod Glory. Also see Not Just Another Pretty Face.

Dog rose (05.25.2024)

Dog rose (05.25.2024)

Occurs along the GAP, especially in the Meyersdale area,  but probably escaped from gardens. Not a native American plant; originally from western Eurasia and north Africa. Introduced as an ornamental.

Japanese knotweed (04.16.2024)

Japanese knotweed (06.04.2024)

Originally from East Asia—Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan—Japanese Knotweed is extremely invasive, occurring in large thickets that drive out Native plants. Even the ultra-conservative New York Post has weighted in on this issue, branding knotweed as an Undesirable Alien. Sprouting in early spring, it can grow several inches in one day and reach heights of up to eight feet. The good news is the young stalks are Edible and can even be used to make Pickles.
