Wanders on the Great Allegheny Passage | Flora #5

 Moon Day 26

Starts Feb 23, 2025 04:14 AM

Ends Feb 24, 2025 05:03 AM

One of the most dangerous days of the Lunar Month. Illusions and fantasies prevail over common sense. Best to stay at home  and keep a low profile.

Mouse-eared hawkweed (05.27.2024)

Meadow hawkweed (05.27.2024)

These two hawkweeds are often growing together. Neither are native to North America, having arrived on these shores from Eurasia.
According to one Sourcehawkweed is an aggressively invasive plant that spreads easily and can form monocultures. It out-competes other plants for water, nutrients, and physical space. Its decaying leaves contain chemical compounds that can harm other plants.” I do love the flowers.

Mountain laurel (06.12.2024)

Mountain laurel, a true Allegheny Mountain native, indeed a symbol of the region, growing along the old Turkey Foot Road, which crosses the GAP just north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Moth mullein (06.19.2024)

Moth mullein (06.19.2024)

A biannual from western Eurasia and north Africa. Now considered invasive.

Ragwort (08.04.20224)

Another import from Eurasia. Considered poisonous.

Heads Up: Lunar Eclipse on March 13-14. Also a Full Moon, The Worm Moon, or as I prefer to call it, the Sugar Moon (when maple sap starts flowing) on the 14th. Beware the Ides of March.
