Purple deadnettle colony (04.06.2025)
An invasive plant from Eurasia. Can occur in large colonies that drive out other plants. One of the first plants to appear in spring, as early as mid-March in the Cumberland area. It does has its fans among Foragers, who gather the new leaves and flowers in prodigious amounts. Purple Deadnettle Smoothies, anyone? Bees love it too.

Grows in profusion along the GAP. Native of East Asia; China, Korea, Japan. Introduced as a ornamental. Now considered invasive in many areas. Subject to eradication in some jurisdictions. Goats love it, however, and the hips can be used to make a vitamin C-rich tea.
