Moon Day 3
Starts Mar 1, 2025 07:41 AM
Ends Mar 2, 2025 08:07 AM
Today is the first day of Meteorological Spring; according to this definition Spring runs from March 1 to May 31. Fancy-pants meteorologists claim the dates align more closely with the annual temperature cycle typically associated with Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer the astronomical definition of Spring, which defines Spring as from the Spring Equinox on March 20 to the Summer Solstice on June 21.
The GAP is open from Frostburg south to Cumberland and north to the Big Savage Tunnel. South of Cumberland is there one icy patch about 100 feet long in the vicinity of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad bridges that you might want to walk your bike around but other than that it is clear sailing.
Heading north from Cumberland there is some debris that has fallen off the southern portal of the Borden Tunnel. Some of the chunks are big enough to do some serious damage had anyone been hit. Some ice in the tunnel, but you can ride around it. Also a lot of down tree limbs and trunks on the trail but these can be ridden around. Saw four other GAPers on the trail to Big Savage Tunnel. The season has began! Still no word on when the Big Savage Tunnel will open. It is usually sometime around the end of March. I wish the people at the Somerset County Recreation and Trails Association, which is in charge of the tunnel, would get their asses in gear. Eagerly awaiting the opening of the tunnel so I can get to Meyersdale. I am in desperate need of some locally produced maple syrup. The stuff sold in grocery stores in Frostburg just doesn’t cut it.
