Wanders on the Great Allegheny Passage | Greenville Lutheran Church | Deal Family

Moon Day 28

Starts Mar 27, 2025 06:13 AM

Ends Mar 28, 2025 06:39 AM

Favorable for Travel

I posted earlier about a side trip off from the Deal Crossroads on the GAP to the famous Twin Churches on Route 160. An equally interesting side trip can be made to the Greenville Lutheran Church and Cemetery where Peter Deal Sr. and many of his family are buried. The 5.1 mile trip (one way) passes by rustic Amish farms and modern, surprisingly well-appointed houses tucked away in the woods, some of which look like the retreats of very well-to-do people. At the Crossroads turn left (southwest) on the Old Deal Road, which is paved for the first quarter mile or so but then peters off into gravel. Proceed to Kendallwood Road, which is paved, and turn left. Follow Kendallwood Road to its intersection with Lohr Road and turn right. Follow Lohr Road to its intersection with Greenville Road and turn right again. Greenville Road soon passes through the village of Pocahontas, named after the famous Native American woman Pocahontas, a.k.a Matoaks or Rebecka.

She was the daughter of Powhatan, the chieftain of a confederation of tribes in Virginia. In 1616 she traveled to London, England, where she posed for the Dutch engraver Simon van de Passe. His etching is the only known likeness of Pocahontas. As can be seen, by the time she got to England she had affected English dress. Pocahontas never made it back to her homeland. She transmigrated in England, soon after her portrait was made.

Proceed on the Greenville Road to the Greenville Lutheran Church. The Greenville congregation was founded by Peter Deal Sr. in 1803. The current church dates to 1910. Peter Deal Sr.’s original tombstone is in the cemetery, along with modern tombstones of both him and his wife. His sons Peter Jr. and Jacob are also buried here, along with subsequent generations of Deals.
